Balance

By :  chriska11 Apr 7 2013 9:09PM

Anyone know of a different site where we can submit photos where there is a more balanced.....objective forum.  I have so much to learn and would love a place where I can post my pictures and not feel I'm competing, but rather receiving constructive critisism.  I enjoy seeing multiple photographers work on this site, but could do that without being a member.  I'm certainly not trying to put DA down, but I don't feel I'm getting what I need.  Suggestions welcome.

Partile pozitive ale jocurile cu impuscaturi

By :  vlad Mar 4 2013 7:34AM

Should be Aware about voting

By :  nirupam photography Dec 27 2012 12:10PM

One should be aware about his voting and giving points on the photos and also of comments. Many people think that they are great photographers by passing comments like 'poor composition', 'framing not good', 'bad lighting' etc. But what is more interesting that when they post something, they always expect well comments which is not possible in reality. In this way some good photos loose the proper rank by those so called "PHOTOGRAPHERS". My request to them,if you can not appreciate other's good works please don't put points on them and just make a skip. You have no authority to destroy the hopes of others....Hey that sort of "PHOTOGRAPHERS" can you hear?

Curious as to whether anyone bothers to enforce this rule anymore?  I noted at least two category winners today, both bearing the photographer's name...  Not the first time either....  I've also seen some really questionable entries, in terms of the categories they should be in....  Is anyone moderating this site, and if so, who?

Site rankings?

By :  NonCometL May 2 2012 7:42AM

The old version of DA had a member ranking page, listing each participants overall rank on the site.  This newer version doesn't seem to have that, or am I just not finding it?  I see category leaders, but not the general rankings as we used to have here....

winning awards

By :  sanjib_a Apr 25 2012 10:33AM

Hi

I am new to this site and don't know what are the criteria to fulfill in order to win any awards here. There is any requirement of min. no. of votes in a day and then the rating will be considered for wining or any other thing? There is any way to increse no. votes for your image?

I am confused.

Thank you

BW or Colour

By :  JulianRRouse Apr 24 2012 12:51PM

I have tried posting the same image in Colour and BW. The raw votes put the colour one in front by about 0.5  - the signature mark puts the black and white in front by about 0.1. What does this say about BW?

WHAT I WROTE ABOUT SOMEONE'S POOR RATING

By :  rockgardenplants Apr 18 2012 12:54AM

I'm always amazed & confused when a weighted voter of 1 gives a rating of a 6 to any photograph.

A "6" in this case isn't even equivalent to a "D" or "F" in school, but lower since the "teacher" has a

voting weight of 1 or is essentially a teacher who doesn't even have a teaching certificate. There are

other "teachers" here that have weights of 400+ (up to 500) that have graded this photo with an 8 or 7.

Please give deeper thought to your voting.

Learning Curve

By :  kyocum Apr 15 2012 8:22PM

I will put my 1 cent in to the recent blogs from those unhappy with this site. Art is a tool for expression and dedication to improvement. This dedication and work ethics is apparent in all work posted here. In no way is this a judgment on any work posted. The desire to learn and brave the waves of our oceanic experiences in art is a worthwhile investment of time. More work and study will promote stronger acceptance for a job well done and move on with patience and hard work.

I just live here.

Looks like no "re-up"

By :  EJARAN Feb 1 2012 11:52AM

Well, it seems I'm finally at the end of the trail. I have 8,250 points with only 2 days left to accumulate another 1,750 point for another monthly subscription at DA.

Unfortunately I'm not willing to pay to keep the subscription.  Over the last 3 years I've compiled a wealth of knowledge and information on photography from the members at this site.  Over the last year or so, I have also seen a good number of the excellent photographers leave DA.  There are still a good number of excellent photographers, but I'm guessing all the squabbling, complaining, mud-slinging and lack of respect finally drives members away.  I haven't participated in forums and blogs as much as I probably should have, but it was mainly because of a lack of time (I still have a "real" job to support me).  Although I would love to devote more time to photography and to teach others (albeit from my limited knowledge).  The teaching part is difficult because, all too often, new members with little, or no training, throw things up on the site and either expect great scores OR an elaborate critique as to why the score is so low.  Time and space is limited and few of us can provide an in depth training session.  We have to assume that members have at least invested some of their own time to learn their equipment and more importantly, learn the basics of exposure, focusing and COMPOSITION !  Hell, I came here to learn ..... but I also spent a significant time developing my skills BEFORE I posted an image or (God forbid) rated another member's image. I took my share of ass-kicking - even Richard Hahn put me in my place once.

My leaving isn't going to change anything at DA.  I'll continue monitoring the site and, who knows, maybe at some point return to posting my images. I've had a great run at this site and I REALLY HAVE TAKEN SOME VERY VALUABLE INFORMATION away from here.

My only regret is I may end up winning the NFL football pool and it won't be as a member of DA!

I sincerely hope the site can turn things around and return to the "old" DA days.

All my best to Daily Awards and the thousands ( I think) of members here.

Goodbye

By :  dscham Jan 5 2012 1:31AM

On December 28 I posted my last photo on this site.  25 votes later on January 4, it is doing poorly and the votes are just leaking in at a snails pace.  February 14 marks my 2 years here and I will not re-up, nor will I return to what has become a dreadful site.  I had sat out for about 4 months while all the fighting was going on between, what appears to be, the 10 or 12 members who make up this site.  As far as I can tell there is nothing upbeat or positive going on here.  I had originally found this site through the Jeff Wignall book, “Winning Digital Photo Contests”.  I was excited to join the competition, hopefully learn what wins in this contest and learn more about photography at the same time.  The last 2 parts of that sentence just didn’t happen.  I still don’t know what truly wins in the contest and the only thing that I’ve learned about photography on this site is that very few will take the time to be constructive.  I admit I have won many times in the minor contests but not much more.

I will state that since I have been here I have always had a problem being “taught” by people who’s skills are not at my level and I’m not trying to be harsh.  If I’m trying to learn to play the piano I don’t seek out a piano teacher who is also just learning.  I want someone who has been in the field and knows what the “pros” are looking for.  Not someone who gives a quick response of “poor composition” and when asked for an RFC they have no idea what composition is.  I realize their votes don’t count for much but what a massive waste of my time, going through the process to learn what other photographers do, or don’t like, about the photo and ultimately finding out they really don’t have a clue.  I have gotten several great RFC’s from a few of the truly benevolent souls here but after 2 years I was hoping for more and they just aren’t there.  So many on this site just don’t provide comments on photos and many don’t respond to RFC’s when asked.

Take for instance my current photo.  It has only received 25 votes and only one….one comment.  I did a quick tally; I have uploaded 80 photos to this site and received on average 4 comments per photo, some more and some less.  I was hoping for much more.  I will admit that I don’t comment on “every” single photo but there are very few that I miss. And on those that I see some talent arising I usually go into a lengthy explanation of how they can improve the shot…that is what I expected from this site, it just didn’t happen.

And what are we competing for again exactly….to be featured next to a fly, a horse or a girl with big eyes staring back at you, on the homepage, wow….now that’s worth a lot.  (I know, I know, most of those members aren’t here anymore, or have changed their main subject of shooting). That is if the site works.  This is one of the clunkiest sites I have ever been on.  For me it locks up and doesn’t move from page to page without first freezing. I have tried everything to reduce the problem on my end but I know now that the problem is not with my computer.  Let me just state this up front, those members photos I mentioned above were for the most part incredible photos, but I know for me, it was always disheartening to always see the same photos in the same spot week after week.

I guess what was the lynchpin for me were several photos that did poorly here have done really well on other sites.  One in particular, made it to the semi finals in the National Geographic Yearly contest, it was one of 10 or so “editors picks” for the week that I uploaded it and was featured on several sites.  I even have a bunch of people that are now interested in it for purchase. The point is, that photo did not do well here among others.

I know that the hallmark of this site is that every one has an opinion of whether they like a shot or not…but what if a lot of those folks are just plain wrong about what makes a good photo, or rather, what they perceive is wrong with the photo that is in their voting window.  You could say the same thing about a judged contest but at least there is the presumption that a pro has seen many more good photos and can “judge” what makes a great photo.  In my experience here, after receiving a low score I check to see what the other member thinks is good photography, by looking at their own photos (that is if that function works at the time).  Most times their photos haven’t won any awards and are subpar…but I’m supposed to respect their opinion on my photos, I don’t think so.

The fact that I can’t view this complete site on my iPhone is just stupid.  I understand Ron’s hesitance to allow mobile voting but when I can’t even view how one of my photos is doing voting wise is just archaic.

Months after joining I found myself getting angry when really low scores (3’s, 4’s) kept plaguing my photos.  The people that were giving these votes had no photos of their own and provided no explanation for the low vote when asked…and usually had names I couldn’t pronounce. I truly felt at the time (and still do) that my photos are/were better than the handful of low votes that received.  This site has usually made me angrier than before I arrived and that alone bothers me enough to move on.  I wish I could say that I hate to leave, but that is just not the case.

What is happening ????

By :  EJARAN Dec 21 2011 12:17PM

I just finished placing 30 votes for images today and  I am at my wit's end!!  I think I only gave 3 votes above a 7. What is going on with this site?  People are posting snapshots that look like they were taken as afterthoughts.

I quit voting because I was beginning to get cruel with my remarks.  I WANT TO GIVE an 8, or a 9...... or God forbid, a 10 to SOMEBODY!!!  I've already told a few members today to PLEASE THINK before you press the shutter, but now I'm telling EVERYBODY.....

BEFORE you decide to MAKE a photo (notice I said make, not TAKE), please give some thought as to WHY are you making the image. Consider composition and, by all means, check your exposure and focus.  Keep in mind that the viewers are NOT looking over your shoulder and have no idea as to what your thoughts are while "creating" your image.  Your images should always be able to stand alone, with no verbal explanation, and be able to convey some sort of feeling or tell some sort of story to the viewer.  Too often I'm seeing images that the photographer must have taken while walking past the subject.  I seriously doubt that the photographer looked through the viewfinder !

I'm feeling that there is a real need for FILM to come back.  Maybe if we were paying for film and processing, we would be more selective with our photography.

I LOVE digital, but I LEARNED with film.

Done ranting .......OUT.

Beginning

By :  SarahBeth Oct 30 2011 4:30PM

Hey guys, I'm new to this site and love it. I am also new to photography and I love that also. =] I am young and have only taken one photography class in high school.

And as a beginner I can use all the help and advice I can get, so please go to my pictures and give me your feedback the good and the bad, anything you think would be helpful.

I would also like to get in some competitions to raise some money for a new camera I want. So if you know any good competitions or other sites please let me know and please tell me my best pictures. And i have real expectations about winning I know I'm not the best and will probably not win in the beginning, but $20 here $20 there from even 3rd place is something that will help and it will teach me.

Any body willing to help please do so and thank you so much if you do.

This really stinks

By :  CieLynne Sep 14 2011 4:27PM

OK, so just as I'm starting to figure this whole thing out, I get a message from ATT saying I've gone over my data plan. I never knew I had a data plan limit and didn't until May (so I'm finding out TODAY). When I went to my usage page, most of my data has been uploading so I'm assuming it's from uploading to this site, since I don't upload to any other site at the moment. I guess this'll make me work that much harder to put out something more worthy of this site and the others who are part of this. I want to perfect my skills and although I do occasionally feel slighted when I get a bad response, isn't that the whole reason for doing this? To get rated and graded and learn from others more in the know???

Anyway, I certainly appreciate the work that everyone here shares. I may not agree with some of them and may not like all of them, but I do appreciate them. So to the producers of these fine works of art, I say, "great job and keep up the fantastic work". And if I've rated you lower than you feel you deserve, I apologize. I just go with my gut and what I feel and if it's a awesome shot, I'll be glad to say so. But if I don't like it or it's just average compared to others, well I've gotta vote that way also. But it's not a reflection of how I feel about your other works of art.

Free Google Places Page for your business.

By :  WhisperRiver Sep 10 2011 2:57AM

Pre Script. Anyone that wants a Google+ account that you read about on one of my prior blogs can go get it by using the following link. https://plus.google.com/i/wsx_GXANM8g:utsB2vSVdSE

I would recommend that everyone that is in the business of photography go out and create and claim your Google Places Page they are free and show up on both the organic searches and the Google Maps when people are searching photography.

Go to Google.com/places. Pick the Get Started Button on the right. If you don't have a Gmail account set one up for free.

You will then be asked to fill out basic information about your business. If it is a home based business make sure when you are setting up your service area that you mark do not show my address. Keep your family safe.

You can up load 10 photos, 5 videos and give a full description of your business. Load the pictures and at least 1 video.

When you have it setup, look up in the URL for the Store ID number and look for the Customer ID number on the top left hand side of the dashboard. You will want those later.

Make sure you claim the listing, Google will give you 1 or 2 options for verification, by phone, have yours right there when you push the verify button and you will get a computer calling you with the PIN #. If it is a new account without a website or a new address, the other option will be verify by mail. It takes up to 2 weeks, but will come as a postcard in an envelope.

You also want to have at least 3 to 5 reviews with 4 or 5 star rating. You can send out and email to your satisfied clients asking them to sign in to or up for a Gmail account and then review and rate your company / business.

If you have any questions, email me or call me and I will walk you though it.

Once you have it all set up and verified, do a search of your phone number without any dashes and it will pull up your places page on Google maps.

Go to the upper right hand corner and choose the chain link button to the upper right side of the map, to the right of the little printer, envelope and then link.

When you double click that link it will give you the option to make a small URL. You want to do that, the copy and paste it into another document.

Take that URL and email it to your satisfied clients asking them to give you that 4 or 5 star review. You may even offer a raffle of a free  print or shooting session for 1 of the people that give you the best review.

While your in the Dashboard building the information, make sure you put in your website.

Also you will see different categories, make sure that the first one is one out of the suggested ones in photography from the drop down box you will get when you start typing in Photographer. IE: Wedding, X, Y or Z that the offer. Once you have  that first one done you can make customs for the next couple. Remember just like a good photo, less is more. You do not want to dilute the pool to much.

Good luck, have fun.

Thanks,

Jim
